NOTE:   There is construction being done to renovate the main hall of Daishoin Temple. Renovation works are expected to continue until 2015. Visitors are still allowed in the temple and can observe the main hall from a makeshift corridor which surrounds the site.
The burial site is not affected by this construction

Japan Trip: Okinawa's Royalty at the Shuri Castle, in Okinawa Main Island, Okinawa07

Shuri Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site, in Okinawa served an important role in Okinawa’s history.
Though presently a district of Naha, Shuri was the former capital of the Ryukyu Kingdom.
Until Okinawa became a Japanese Prefecture in 1879, Shuri Castle was both the administrative center
as well as residence for the Ryukyu kings for several centuries.

The castle was originally constructed in the late 1300s.
Destroyed many times through war and fires, the current buildings are a result of the reconstruction efforts from 1992.
To approach the castle, located on the top of hill, visitors need to pass through many gates, including the well known Shureimon Gate.

The castle’s main hall, the Seiden was the former venue for many governmental events. A landmark of Okinawa, the Seiden’s flamboyant decoration,
architecture and vermillion color shows the difference in castle style between Okinawa and mainland Japan.

Visitors will find the Una Plaza in front of the Seiden.
Here many ceremonies were held. The Una Plaza is enclosed by the Hokuden (North Hall), Nanden (South Hall) and the Hoshinmon (Hoshin Gate).
The Hokuden and Nanden were administrative buildings which were also used as venues to welcome visitors from China and mainland Japan.

Visitors are welcomed to view the interior of these historic halls.
The interiors of the Hokuden and Nanden are like modern museums with informative displays about Ryukyu Kingdom as well as
the Okinawa’s history with the Japanese mainland and China. Visitors can also view local historic artifact as well as cultural replicas received during foreign trade.

The Seiden has been reconstructed in its original style.
The richness and fine furnishing the Ryukyu kings were accustomed to are displayed in the Seiden.
Visitors can even view a replica of the king's throne and crown are among the exhibits.

From Hakata how to get to Tokuyama by Shinkansen train

Tokuyama station is located in Shunan city in Yamaguchi prefecture. Shunan’s (Tokuyama) industrial complex is very close to Tokuyama station. Petrochemical zones have been reinvented as tourist attractions due to their unique, otherworldly beauty. The ‘kojo yakei’  (夜景meaning ‘factory night view’) phenomenon kicked off several years ago. Visitors can enjoy the beauty after dark from the station.

How to get there by Shinkansen?
When visitors use direct shinkansen train, the one way journey will take about 45 minutes with a cost of about from 5,800 yen. There are multiple connections for every hour. Hakata station and Tokuyama station are connected with each other by the JR Sanyo Shinkansen(山陽新幹線). Several Shinkansen trains don’t stop at Tokuyama station so visitors may have to change trains at Shin-Yamaguchi station.

Seat Classes:
Generally, shinkansen trains in Japan offer seats in two classes, which are usually found in separate cars:

Ordinary :
Just like the name suggests, ordinary seats are the regular seats found on all shinkansen trains. Even though the size and foot space of ordinary seats varies between train sets, ordinary seats on shinkansen generally offer a pleasant trips and generous amount of foot space.

Green Car:
It is comparable to business class on airplanes. Green cars offer seats that are larger and more comfortable than ordinary seats and offer more foot space. Green Cars have a tendency to be less crowded than ordinary cars.

Ticket price
Ordinary: about 6,000 yen
Green car about 8,600 yen

Japan Rail Pass:
The Japan Rail Pass is valid on Sakura but not on Nozomi or Mizuho trains, The JR West Sanyo Pass and the JR Sanyo-Shikoku-Kyushu Rail Pass are valid on all trains. For further information click the link below and check our movie!

Kintai-kyo Bridge--beauty, history, architecture

Known as one of Japan’s top three great bridges, Kintai-kyo Bridge is Iwakuni’s most famous landmark inviting both domestic and international tourists to partake in its beauty. Located on the foothills of Mount Yokoyama, this completely wooden bridge is made without using any nails. Visitors can enjoy the traditional Japanese beauty this 5 arched bridge presents as they cross-over to the other side of the Nishiki River.

The construction of the Kintai-kyo Bridge, commissioned by Kikkawa Hiroyoshi, the third feudal lord of Iwakuni, began after strong currents demolished a bridge used to cross the Nishiki River. The bridge was completed in 1673 and stood for almost 400 years until a violent typhoon came to Iwakuni in 1950. The current bridge was completed in 1953 by residents, determined to recreate their beloved bridge.

In the past, only samurais were permitted to cross this bridge.  However, nowadays anyone  is allowed to cross the bridge for a small fee.

Access Information:
*20 mins by bus from Iwakuni station with a cost of 250 yen one way.  Buses are available every 5 to 15 minutes.
*15 mins by bus from Shin-Iwakuni station with a cost of 290 yen one way.  Two or three buses are available every hour.

Hours: Always open
Closed: All Year Round
Admission: 300 yen (round trip)
