Kazura Bridge is the type of "bridges" that consists of a wooden cart suspend on a rope over the river, and were used to transport goods and people.
13 suspension bridges made of mountain vines, called kazurabashi, used to be found throughout the Iya Valley and provided a essential means of getting people and goods across the river in olden days.
Two of the surviving bridges still stand side by side deep in the ravine.
They are known as the Oku-Iya Kazurabashi or myoto-bashi(couples bridges).

The larger of the two bridges, Otto no Hashi (meaning:Husband Bridge), stretches 44 meters across the river next to a small waterfall, while the slightly lower Tsuma no Hashi (meaning: Wife Bridge) is a 22 meter span just a little ways upstream.
The bridges are constructed with steel cables covered within the vines for safety.
They are rebuilt every three years. The bridges are connected to each other by a network of paved hiking trails that also lead to camping facilities on the opposite side of the river.

Another popular attraction is a Yaen Bridge (meaning: Wild Monkey) placed next to the Wife Bridge.
It a human-power ropeway. Visitors can try out the wild monkey bridge and pull themselves across the river.

The Iya Valley (Iyakei) is a sheltered and private mountainous valley along the Iya River in western Tokushima Prefecture.
Its steep forested slopes are connected to the outside world by a zigzag,sometimes incredibly narrow mountain road that leads the valley.
Since the Iya valley located secluded regions, it is difficult to access, however, that is what attracts visitor to the area who want to experience a traditional, nature. 

Historically the Iya Valley has been difficult a place to enter, and used as a refuge for members of the defeated Taira or Heike Clan who escaped to the region toward the end of the 12th century after losing the Gempei War (1180 to1185).
Their descendants can still be found around the tiny mountain villages that dispersedly existing.

The Iya Valley is usually divided into two areas.
Nishi Iya (West Iya) located around the entrance to the valley and is slightly more developed and more accessible as there are relatively frequent buses to some of the major attractions.
Oku Iya (Inner Iya, also called Higashi Iya or East Iya) lies further back into the valley so is difficult to reach without a rental car or other means of private transportation.

Manikin Peeing Boy Statue
At the edge of this dizzying, 200 meter high cliff stands the boy statue posed as if he were peeing off the ledge down to the valley bellow.
This statue is placed at a beautiful scenic spot a few steps from The Iya ONSEN HOTEL, where local folklore says travelers would climb out to pee off in order to try to act strong or play chicken.

Shin-Iya Onsen Hotel Kazurabashi 
This hotel is located one of Japan's three major least visited regions.
The sky-high open-air bath is accessed by a cable car. It provides local dishes which are popular amongst guests.
The hotel has three outdoor baths, one for each gender as well as a mixed gender bath in which you can watch nice views out over the Iya Valley.
The baths are found high up on the mountainside above the hotel.

Iya Onsen Hotel
The Iya Onsen Hotel is located high up on the steep slope overlooking the Iya Valley.
A notable point in the hotel is that its outdoor hot baths located along the river and you have to take a cable car some 170 meters below the hotel itself.

Maehama Beach( Yonaha-Maehama)
It stretches seven kilometers and is suited for swimming and various other water sports.
Its white sand beach in the southwestern corner of Miyako usually leads rankings of Japan's best beaches.
The beach is also known for beautiful sunsets.  There are some showers, toilets and a rental shop.

Urauchi River Cruise is a boat tour along the Urauchi River, the larger of the two main rivers.
The hour long cruise takes its visitors along the Urauchi River to a trailhead. From here,
it is necessary to walk 45 minutes through the jungle to the two stunning waterfalls.

Okinawa World is Okinawa Prefecture's foremost theme park and presents the local history, culture and nature.
The park's has many attractions, such as massive natural cave, a craft village and a snake museum.

Gyokusendo
It is one of the main attractions in the park.
With a total length of five kilometers, the Cave is the longest of the many caves in the south of Okinawa
Island and the second longest cave in the entire country.
890 meters of the cave are open to the public and feature spectacular stalactites and stalagmites.
The inside of the cave is well maintained and the walking paths are comfortable.

Kingdom Village
It is a nice replica of a traditional Ryukyu village with workshops introducing the various traditional Okinawan crafts,
such as dyeing, weaving, paper making, pottery, sugar cone processing, the making of music instruments and glass blowing.
Hands-on experiences are offered at many of the workshops.

Habu Park
It was named after the infamous, poisonous, local Habu snake.
Habu park consists of a snake museum, a small, run down zoological garden with some snakes on display and a snake show.
Throughout the park, visitors have ample of opportunities to purchase local products at numerous souvenir shops.
There is also a restaurant specialized in Okinawa cuisine.

Access Infromation
Okinawa World is near the southern tip of Okinawa Honto, about ten kilometers south of Naha.

From Naha Bus Center, board bus number 83 all the way to its terminal stop,
Gyokusendo-mae, which is located in front of Okinawa World (60 minutes, 580 yen, one bus every 1-2 hours). 

 

Sefa-utaki (斎場御嶽) is an historical sacred space and important site of the indigenous Okinawan religion,
which, similar to Shinto, places emphasis on the worship of nature.

The site is located on a densely forested hillside along the ocean and features several rock formations,
which are connected with each other by walking trails. 

It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu in Nanjō, Okinawa.

In the early 16 th century, Sefa Utaki came into prominence.
During this period the Okinawan religion permeated under the royal government,
and Sefa Utaki became one of the main locations for religious ceremonies and rituals.

Nakama River Cruise departs from Ohara, located in the southern part of the island.
The boat will travel inland to a large mangrove tree.

 The cruise will take about 1 hour with a Japanese speaking guide providing Japanese explanations about the river and the mangrove trees.

Near the end of World WarII, Okinawa Island became the site of one of the war's bloodiest battles,
when the US forces invaded and occupied the island.
An estimated 200,000 people, including more than 100,000 civilians and 12,500 Americans were killed in the battle.

The devastating effects of the war had a deep impact on the local people.
There are a number of monuments and museums relating to the period throughout Okinawa Island.
The worst battle took place in the south, and that is where some of the larger monuments have been constructed.

Peace Memorial Museum, located in Okinawa Peace Memorial Park,
gives a sobering overview of the lead up to the battle,
the battle itself and the reconstruction of Okinawa.

Cornerstone of Peace
It’s a collection of large stone plates with the names of all fallen soldiers and civilians,
including Koreans, Taiwanese, Americans and Britons. 

Himeyuri Monument (Himeyuri no To)
. It commemorates the fate of female high school students, who worked in army field hospitals in caves under horrendous conditions.
Most of them did not survive the war.

Former Navy Underground Headquarters
It consists of several hundred meters of underground corridors and rooms that served as the Japanese navy's headquarters during the war.
A lot of sailors committed suicide in these tunnels, after their situation had grown hopeless towards the end of the battle.

Former Navy Underground Headquarters
From the Naha Bus Terminal/Asahibashi, board bus number 55 or 98 to Tomigusuku Minami
(15 minutes, 260 yen, 3-5 buses/hour)
from where the Former Navy Underground Headquarters are a ten minute walk up the hill. 
 

The Mihama American Village is a large entertainment complex located in central Okinawa Island.
 There are Many American military bases in the area, and the entertainment complex' theme of Americana shows
a feeling of nostalgic pleasure to residents of the bases as well as an interesting diversion for the locals.
The Mihama American Village is similar to a big American outdoor shopping mall with lots of shops, restaurants, cafes and a large parking lot.

The most noticeable feature of the American Village is the large Ferris Wheel.
The Americana theme is found at many establishments, like fashion shops selling
American brand clothing or restaurants specializing in hot dogs and hamburgers.

American and Japanese movies are shown at the Mihama 7 PLEX movie theater.
Just a few steps away along the waterfront is Sunset Beach.
Facing westward, the beach is a good place to watch the sunset and is a popular spot for barbecues.

From the Naha Bus Terminal, board bus number 28, 29 or 120 to Gunbyoin-mae
(軍病院前, also known as Army Hospital-mae or US Naval Hospital, 40 minutes, 730 yen, frequent departures)
or Kuwae (桑江) bus stop from where the American Village can be reached in a short walk.


 

The Zakimi Castle Ruins are located on a hill in central Okinawa Island.
Only the stone walls remain, which visitors can ascend for nice views over the ruins and
the surrounding area and as far as Shuri Castle in the distance.
The castle is included as one of the UNESCO World Heritage designated Castles of the Ryukyu Kingdom.

Zakimi Castle was built between 1416 and 1422 by the Chuzan Kingdom which ruled over central Okinawa Island.
The castle served as a safeguard against rebels in the north.
After the Chuzan Kingdom defeated the Hokuzan Kingdom in the north and eventually united the island into the Ryukyu Kingdom.
Next to the parking lot, there is a small museum with displays on local art, folkcraft, and history.
The museum exhibits archaeological relics, dwellings, funerary customs and the war.
