Japan Travel: Star Studded Sand on Hoshizuna no Hama, Iriomote Island, Okinawa04

Japan’s southern islands, Okinawa, is a favorite vacation spot for both Japanese and non-Japanese visitors.
With its beautiful beaches, abundant natural beauty, an array of water sports and wildlife observation,
there are many things to be experienced here.
Among the Okinawa islands, Iriomote Island (西表島), Okinawa's second largest island is quite popular.
With nearly 90% of the island consisting of jungle and mangrove forest, visitors will have a chance to see natural beauty at its rawest stage.
Visitors who are exceptionally lucky may be able to witness the Iriomote Yamaneko, an endangered species, which are only found on this island.
It is thought only about 100 of this nocturnal “wildcat” are still in existence.

Iriomote has many beautiful beaches with the appropriate beach related water sports such as swimming,
snorkeling and diving.
Among these fabulous beaches, Hoshizuna no Hama is exceptionally special.
The name Hoshizuna consists of hoshi meaning star and zuna meaning sand.
This beach has grains of sand shaped like tiny stars. In reality, the “star sand” grains are skeletons of small one-celled organisms that reside within the ocean’s plants.

Hoshizuna no Hama Beach is great for swimming and snorkeling.
With the water being shallow during low tide, it is easy to see the tropical fish swimming in and out of the coral.
There are no public facilities at the beach other than a free parking lot.  Admission is also free.

Caution:
*When swimming at any beach in Okinawa, beware of strong currents which may pull you into the sea.
*The Habu Jellyfish is prevalent in this area from June to October.
There are English signs explaining the dangers at the beaches.
And some beaches have nets segregating the swimming areas.
It is rare to be stung by a Habu Jellyfish. However, if it does occur, pour vinegar over the sting,
remove any tentacles and seek medical attention as it may become life threatening.

Japan Trip: Okinawa's Royalty at the Shuri Castle, in Okinawa Main Island, Okinawa07

Shuri Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site, in Okinawa served an important role in Okinawa’s history.
Though presently a district of Naha, Shuri was the former capital of the Ryukyu Kingdom.
Until Okinawa became a Japanese Prefecture in 1879, Shuri Castle was both the administrative center
as well as residence for the Ryukyu kings for several centuries.

The castle was originally constructed in the late 1300s.
Destroyed many times through war and fires, the current buildings are a result of the reconstruction efforts from 1992.
To approach the castle, located on the top of hill, visitors need to pass through many gates, including the well known Shureimon Gate.

The castle’s main hall, the Seiden was the former venue for many governmental events. A landmark of Okinawa, the Seiden’s flamboyant decoration,
architecture and vermillion color shows the difference in castle style between Okinawa and mainland Japan.

Visitors will find the Una Plaza in front of the Seiden.
Here many ceremonies were held. The Una Plaza is enclosed by the Hokuden (North Hall), Nanden (South Hall) and the Hoshinmon (Hoshin Gate).
The Hokuden and Nanden were administrative buildings which were also used as venues to welcome visitors from China and mainland Japan.

Visitors are welcomed to view the interior of these historic halls.
The interiors of the Hokuden and Nanden are like modern museums with informative displays about Ryukyu Kingdom as well as
the Okinawa’s history with the Japanese mainland and China. Visitors can also view local historic artifact as well as cultural replicas received during foreign trade.

Japan Tourist Spot Hiroshima 02 Remembering Peace at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park

Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park (広島平和記念公園 ), located in downtown Hiroshima, is the site of where the first atomic bomb was dropped at 8:15 am on August 6, 1945.  The park is dedicated to the victims of the atomic bomb. The park promotes peace while reiterating the horrors of nuclear war.

Within this spacious park visitors will find many structures reflecting peace.  On Peace Boulevard, behind the fountain is the Peace Memorial Museum. Here visitors can witness and learn about Hiroshima’s history and struggle after the attack.

Visitors will see an arched structure, the Memorial Cenotaph, located in the middle of the park. The names of all of the victims of the bomb are written here with the inscription “Let all the souls here rest in peace for we shall not repeat the evil." The structure was constructed on August 6, 1952, with the arch shape reflecting the souls of the victims.

The Peace Flame behind the Cenotaph has been continuously lit since 1964. With a prayer of internal peace, the flame will remain lit until all nuclear weapons have been destroyed and the world is free from the threat of a nuclear war.

Hiroshima Memorial, or commonly known as the Atomic Bomb Dome, lies at the end of park, near the streetcar street (Aioi Street). Known as the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall at the time, this is the only remaining building near the bomb’s epicenter. Though there was some controversy whether the building should be torn down or preserved, it was decided the Atomic Bomb Dome is an important part of local as well as world history. Though the Dome has been reconstructed a few times, the original architecture was always been preserved in remembrance of the victims.

Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park is the site of the annual Peace Memorial Ceremony held on August 6. There are peace exhibits throughout the park as well as narratives from the survivors of the atomic bomb, storytelling activities for children. Near the Peace Memorial Museum, visitors can find information about experiences translated in English.

On that day, i the evening, paper lanterns illuminated by candles are floated down the river next to the park. For a nominal fee, visitors can create their own paper lantern, with their own message of peace, to be floated down the river. Once the lantern is created, the volunteers will assemble the lantern and assist visitors in floating the lantern. Please be aware, as many people wish to participate in this tradition, there is usually a long line to float the lantern. Whether involved in the creation or not, all visitors to the park can view the paper lanterns floating down the river, the candlelight illuminating the black water.

Japan Tourist Spot Hiroshima 14 Spicy Hiroshima Tsukemen Noodles, For Noodle lovers

Noodle lovers will enjoy the variations of the noodles Japan has to offer. From thick udon noodles, to the various types of soba and ramen, there are many types of noodles which are prepared in a variety of different styles and flavors.

Hiroshima Tsukemen is a Hiroshima born noodle dish available throughout Hiroshima with some shops in Tokyo and Osaka featuring this Hiroshima delicacy as well. A cold, spicy dish, tsukemen is available throughout the year, though popular in the summer.

Tsukemen consists a bowl of cold noodles with vegetables and a dipping sauce. The sauce is spicy, though diners can make a request as to the level of spiciness they desire (the higher the number, the spicier the sauce).  As the noodles have no flavor, diners dip the noodles in the spicy sauce before consuming. Though there is a difference among tsukemen shops, diners who order tsukemen can expect sliced pork, hard or soft boiled egg, boiled vegetables and cucumbers to be served with their noodles and spicy sauce. Most diners will dip the garnishing in the dipping sauce as well before consuming.

Though tsukemen shops are located throughout Hiroshima, the downtown area has its fair share of tsukemen shops. As it is a popular midnight snack after a night out, visitor will find many tsukemen with late operating hours in the drinking areas around the Nagarekawa Area.

Japan's highlight Hiroshima17 Itsukushima Shrine Miyajima UNESCO World Heritage Site

The “floating torii gates” within the Seto Island Sea invites visitors to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Itsukushima Shrine (嚴島神社) located on the beautiful island of Miyajima, in Hiroshima Prefecture.

Itsukushima Shrine has been a Shinto holy site from very early times. In 1168, Taira no Kiyomori, the most powerful man in Japan during the end of the Heian Period, selected the island as the site of his clan's family shrine and built Itsukushima Shrine. The shrine complex consists of multiple buildings, including a prayer hall, a main hall and a Noh theater stage, which are connected by boardwalks and supported by pillars above the sea.

The shrine and its torii gate are unique in that they were constructed over water. Because of this they appear to float in the sea during high tide. At low tide, the water drains out of the bay. During this time, visitors have the opportunity to walk out and see the gates up close.

The shrine is located on a small inlet, while the torii gates are constructed in the Seto Inland Sea. Visitors can enjoy walking along the paths leading to the shrine while looking at the sea. After sunset, the shrine and the torii gate are illuminated.  Entry into Itsukushima shrine is not permitted at night.  However, visitors can enjoy the illuminated view by spending the night at one of the many ryokans (Japanese inns) on the island.

Alternatively, tourists can view the illuminated island from boat cruises. Though the length may vary, typically, cruises last thirty minutes and take passengers around the bay and through the torii gate (during high tide only). Reservations are required but can be easily made through one's ryokan or at the tourist information desk.
